Sectors and Unit in Prison Skopje

Admission of convicted persons sentenced to imprisonment is carried out in accordance with the Law on Execution of Sanctions, based on an Uprising Act issued by a Judge for Execution of Sanctions of the competent court and a final court verdict.

The process of re-socialization of the convicts is the basic function of the penitentiary and correctional institution.

The purpose of the execution of the sentence of imprisonment is to enable convicts to get involved in a society with the best prospects for independent life in accordance with the law.

In order to achieve the goal of imprisonment, the convicted person develops a sense of responsibility and is encouraged to accept and actively participate in the treatment during the execution of the sentence, motivated and directed towards re-education and development of the positive character traits and capabilities that speed up successful return to society.

At the reception department, the convicted person is kept up to 15 days. For this time the convict talks with the expert team of the institution composed of a teacher, a psychologist, a social worker and a psychiatrist. He is also acquainted with the house rules of the institution, the rights and obligations during the serving of the sentence and the manner of their realization.

Based on the obtained results from the study of the personality of the convicted person and from the performed risk assessment, his classification into a certain unit and distribution to a particular treatment group is performed for the purpose of applying measures and effects of the same or similar kind.

The convict’s treatment during the execution of the sentence of imprisonment is realized for the purpose of adapting the convicted person to the institution, accepting his own responsibility for the committed criminal act, accepting and active participation of the convicted person in the realization of the goals of the individually specified program

treatment, acceptance and active participation of the convict in the preparation for the post-penal period, as well as for social adaptation, especially towards those convicted persons who oppose or reject the treatment.

The convicted persons are preparing to be released from serving the sentence from the beginning of serving the sentence in the institution. Preparation activities for the dismissal of the convicted person are intensified in the last three months before the expiration of the sentence, that is, before the day when it is assumed that they will be dismissed. These sentenced persons are referred to a release unit where the activities for preparation are carried out according to a special program for preparing for the dismissal of convicted persons.

Work training is carried out by instructors and other qualified persons who through their influence contribute to the achievement of the specific goals defined in the individual program for treatment of the convicted person, such as: changing the negative attitudes towards work, developing and stimulating the interest for work, respecting the general discipline in work, cooperation with other convicted persons in the working group, as well as cooperation with other professionals in conducting the treatment.
